The Paradise Project

“Freeburg the Radical and Ruben the Cuban are modern-day anti-capitalists with a mission. From a chance meeting at the Seattle protests of 1999, they resolve that, if they cannot find the answers about the present state of humanity, then they sure as hell are going to have a good time asking questions along the way. Heading to Florida in search of a boat, they manage to persuade a naive admin worker from New England, an overt Key West pole dancer and a drug addled street musician from Tennessee to make the jump and step with them into the whirlwind of global politics.

Taking inspiration from Freeburg’s childhood fascination with the 17th Century pirates, they sail across the Caribbean Sea to an island off Central America where, they are sure, paradise awaits them. What they find upon arrival of course is not the Utopia they expected. Instead, they stumble upon a passionate love affair, bitter family divides and two complete ideological opposites co-existing in a melting pot of unstable national politics and economic exploitation.

Communism has failed us. Capitalism is failing. As they characters grapple to simply stay afloat, and all they hold dear crumbles around them as the story reaches its explosive conclusion, they are forced to ask themselves the following question with a growing sense of urgency:

Just what the hell are we going to do next?”
